I think you're right with your critic about that they are to close to each other for this short time after the pilot. The writer should have shown - in my opinion - more about how they learn from each other and how they find together to this good team we know from the later seasons.

Again, you're right. I had also strong memories to Conversion when I had read the book. But nevertheless I like the story much. And especially the scenes between Rodney and John. I like the part when John starts getting sick and Rodney is afraid of him. "What's wrong? Did he shot you? You should have mentioned it earlier. Rugged stoicism has its place in these situations, but..." And so on. It shows really good that Rodney not only cares about himself.
